IFF's Space Research Results in Unique Fragrance Note
A "Zen" for the New Millenium Uses Space Rose

New York, NY, August 31, 2000 - When the new Shiseido fragrance Zen launches worldwide this October, it will contain a revolutionary new fragrance ingredient, a space rose note, with origins literally "out of this world." Never before used commercially in a fine fragrance, the unique note is based on microgravity research conducted aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery Flight STS-95 in October 1998 by International Flavors & Fragrances' (IFF) scientist, Braja Mookherjee, Ph.D.

Former Astronaut John Glenn and IFF's miniature rose bush Overnight Scentsation™ shared the flight whose experiments showed that three major chemical components of the living plant's fragrance changed dramatically in microgravity, producing a different scent while in space. According to Dr. Mookherjee, IFF's Vice President (Research & Development) and Global Director of Natural Products Research, "IFF's space research and the development of this entirely new fragrance note is extremely significant because it means that there are almost limitless possibilities in the universe to obtain similar unknown aroma molecules for use in fine fragrances and other fragrance products."

Shiseido Cosmetic Ltd.'s new Zen fragrance, described as a floral, spiritual, woody scent, also contains more "earthly" fragrance notes such as Mousouchiku, a particular strain of bamboo that grows wild in Japan; Hair Cup Moss, a Shiseido-original scent ingredient developed to evoke moss gardens made wet by the rain; and Kyara wood and Modified Valerian, claimed to enhance mood and promote well-being. Nathalie Lorson, the IFF perfumer based in France who collaborated with Shiseido's perfumers to create Zen, says, "Finding a note like the space rose and integrating this component into the new fragrance really proves the adage that perfume-making is the consummate marriage of art and science."
