IFF’s global sensory and consumer science effort is spearheaded at our world-class Consumer Testing Center (CTC), located at our corporate R&D facility in New Jersey. The CTC is a worldwide resource to IFF consumer researchers providing a controlled test environment for sensory and consumer testing of products containing IFF flavors and fragrances. The center has a new focus group facility enabling IFF to evaluate the tastes and preferences of consumers.
IFF’s sensory experts and psychologists direct research programs exploring topics such as fragrance performance, the psychophysics of sensory perception (including chemesthetic properties such as warming, cooling, and tingling), the genetic basis for flavor and fragrance preference, and the emotional effects of aromas on mood, performance, health, and well-being.
Most recently, IFF’s sensory and consumer science team has been responsible for:
- Groundbreaking research into the effects of human pheromones on adult men and women. This is the most comprehensive research to date on this topic, and IFF has the unique resources to put this technology to work for our customers.
- The Consumer Fragrance Thesaurus—a database that links fragrances and aroma ingredients with the moods and product attributes that they evoke in consumers.
- Fragrance Profiling—a quantitative and objective sensory profile of a fragrance generated by a group of panelists (known as snIFF Profilers) trained in descriptive analysis.
