The Natural Betaine Formulators Choose When Performance and Sustainability Both Matter

GENENCARE® OSMS BA is the preferred natural betaine for skin moisturization and barrier support. Naturally sourced. Upcycled by design. Proven in performance.

Ingredient Identity

Betaine (chemically known as trimethylglycine) is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative composed of a glycine molecule with three methyl groups attached. This zwitterionic molecular structure enables betaine to interact strongly with water, helping to maintain cellular hydration and osmotic balance.

Triple-Action Skin Hydration: Humectancy, Osmoprotection, Barrier Care

GENENCARE® OSMS BA delivers hydration beyond the surface. Unlike hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture at the skin surface, or squalane, which forms a protective film, it works across three complementary pathways: attracting water, protecting cells from osmotic stress, and strengthening the tight junctions that hold the skin barrier together. This triple-action approach helps address water loss at its source, making betaine for skin fundamentally different from single-mechanism moisturizers.

Humectant skincare with a difference

As a humectant skincare active, betaine attracts and retains water in the stratum corneum. Unlike many other humectant ingredients in skincare, it also works within skin cells: keratinocytes increase the uptake of betaine under stress to help regulate water balance, maintain cell volume, and protect against dehydration.

The Skincare Science of Osmolytes

Betaine is classified as an osmolyte skincare ingredient, small, naturally occurring molecules that help cells balance water under stress. This skin hydration ingredient works within keratinocytes to regulate water flow, restore cell volume through osmosis, and strengthen tight junctions by stabilizing proteins1, addressing water loss at its source.

Natural Betaine FAQs

GENENCARE® OSMS BA is a natural betaine and osmolyte that is widely used in hair and skincare formulations for its multifunctional benefits. In this section, we address the commonly asked questions about IFF’s Betaine (GENENCARE® OSMS BA), offering validated insights to support your formulation decisions.

Natural betaine is an osmolyte: small, naturally occurring organic molecules that help cells balance water under stress. In skin, they help keratinocytes regulate water flow, restore cell volume through osmosis, and strengthen tight junctions by stabilizing proteins, tackling water loss at its source. Unlike hyaluronic acid (a surface-level humectant) or squalane (a barrier-supporting emollient), osmolytes like betaine hydrate on three fronts: osmoprotection, barrier support and humectancy.

Active betaine (trimethylglycine, GENENCARE® OSMS BA) is an active ingredient with moisturization and skin-barrier-strengthening properties, while cocamidopropyl betaine and coco betaine are surfactants with foaming and cleansing properties. In short, GENENCARE® OSMS BA is the active osmolyte, not the surfactant; the ‘Untangling the Betaines’ story explains the distinction in formulator language.

Yes. Patch testing confirms that natural betaine is non-irritating, even at high concentrations, and can help mitigate the irritation caused by surfactants in rinse-off systems.

Yes. GENENCARE® OSMS BA is sourced from sugar beet molasses, a byproduct of sugar production. It is Upcycled Certified™ through the program now operated by Where Food Comes From (originally launched by the Upcycled Food Association). IFF was among the first ingredient suppliers certified in the cosmetic active category. GENENCARE® OSMS BA is also COSMOS, ECOCERT and NATRUE approved.

Yes. In cosmetics, natural betaine and trimethylglycine (TMG) refer to the same molecule, an amino-acid derivative with an N⁺ and a COO⁻ in its structure. The INCI name on label declarations is ‘Betaine.’

Yes. GENENCARE® OSMS BA is a free-flowing crystalline powder that is highly water-soluble and stable across a wide pH range, suitable for leave-on and rinse-off systems at a recommended 2 to 5% use level per the IFF product page.

IFF’s natural betaine is sugar beet-derived, upcycled from the sugar beet molasses side stream of sugar production using IFF’s proprietary desugarization technology.

Osmoprotection: Helps cells manage water balance in the skin by osmosis and protects cells from hydric stress.
Moisturization: Helps improve short- and long-term skin moisturization and reduces visible dryness.
Skin barrier reinforcement: Reinforces tight junctions in the epidermis, reduce skin permeability and transepidermal water loss.

It helps maintain keratinocyte cell volume under hydric stress by increasing the expression of osmolyte transporters like BGT-1 on the cell membranes. It also protect proteins from denaturation by increasing their stability.
