{"id":24980,"date":"2020-12-10T09:16:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T14:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iff.com\/?p=24980"},"modified":"2025-08-05T14:17:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T18:17:16","slug":"sustainable-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iff.com\/es\/media\/stories\/sustainable-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Science and Collaboration are Driving Innovations in Cleaning Solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green science and industry collaboration are driving sustainable innovation in laundry detergent development, explains Todd Krieger, Manager, Product Stewardship and Regulatory Group at IFF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Formula for a Greener Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-consumption-production\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations<\/a>&nbsp;(UN) population predictions are accurate, by 2050 the world\u2019s 9.6bn inhabitants will need three planet Earths to sustain their current lifestyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<em>Enzyme chemistry can be considered a poster child for green chemistry.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Todd Krieger<\/strong><br>Manager, Product Stewardship and Regulatory Group<br>Nutrition &amp; Biosciences<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slowing the rate of climate change and reducing the impact of resource poverty are two key goals of the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/?menu=1300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SDGs<\/a>). They are challenging everybody to change the way they think, act and consume \u2013 and ingredient suppliers and detergent manufacturers have a critical role to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clean Reactions: Science Driving Sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enzymes can play a part in this movement. Produced from renewable resources and readily biodegradable, they\u2019re the sustainable choice for industry innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEnzyme chemistry can be considered a poster child for green chemistry,\u201d says Todd Krieger, Manager, Product Stewardship and Regulatory Group at IFF. \u201cIt addresses most of its 12 principles, including catalysis, the use of renewable feedstocks and design for energy efficiency, to name a few.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In laundry applications, by lowering the average temperature of a washing machine cycle by just 3\u00baC, European energy usage could be cut by 14%, the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (<a href=\"https:\/\/iprefer30.eu\/component\/attachments\/attachments?task=download&amp;id=244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AISE<\/a>) found. But enzymes could soon help take things further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New enzymes are being developed that enable washing at even lower temperatures with no loss of stain removal performance \u2013 potentially as low as 16\u00baC. Doing so could save huge amounts of energy across the world, reducing carbon emissions and saving customers money.<br><strong>Come Together: Industry Collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To develop solutions at scale, sustainable innovation needs more than traditional R&amp;D. According to findings by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/sites\/horizon2020\/files\/ce_booklet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Commission<\/a>, changes are needed across \u2018entire systems\u2019 to be successful. Regulation, investment, education and collaboration need to coalesce to drive change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCollaboration is required across brands, ingredient suppliers and machine designers to drive sustainable innovation,\u201d says Krieger. \u201cIngredient suppliers need to develop new products with the right functionality to meet brand owners\u2019 needs, while machine designers need to develop features to take advantage of these new improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By collaborating and innovating together, chemical manufacturers, detergent brands, retailers and consumers can combine to help create a better world.
