According to <a href=\"https:\/\/professionalprograms.mit.edu\/blog\/leadership\/the-gender-gap-in-stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIT research<\/a>, women make up just 28% of the STEM workforce. Early experiences, societal expectations, and the availability of opportunities influence this disparity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-empowering-girls-in-stem\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Empowering_Girls_in_STEM\"><\/span>Empowering Girls in STEM<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This program began with a simple observation that revealed a bigger challenge: a clear gender imbalance in a local science club. Looking back, I didn\u2019t even particularly like science at that age! My own path to becoming a scientist was a mix of luck and timing\u2014the right experiences, the right teachers saying the right things, at the right moments. I didn\u2019t want the future of women in STEM to depend on chance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2014 Courtney Bement, Scientist<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That realization, along with the support of other IFF female scientists, brought the IFF <em>We Are Scientists<\/em> initiative to life. Before the start of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/iff_2025idwgs-activity-7295875749880713218-1STI?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAABQF3kgB-nMP0whlhZmmSRVElxTvU_9YqBY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first event in 2024<\/a>, the girls were asked to draw what they thought a scientist looked like. That\u2019s the first step. Maybe even the most important one. It\u2019s about believing that you belong here.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2014 Alena La, Scientist<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/education.ec.europa.eu\/eu\/news\/new-report-addresses-the-gender-gap-in-stem-education-across-educational-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research from the European Commission<\/a> emphasizes that early exposure and supportive environments are crucial for maintaining girls\u2019 interest in STEM. Combine that with gender stereotypes, and it\u2019s easy for girls to miss the message that science is cool. That\u2019s why the program focuses on younger age groups, making science accessible, exciting, and visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hands-on-science-experiments\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hands-On_Science_Experiments\"><\/span>Hands-On Science Experiments<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the things that makes the Girl Scouts STEM events special is their focus on fun and curiosity\u2014not routine memorization. Rather than hosting just another day of activities, the team designed experiments that spark creativity and show that science is about asking questions and testing ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each year, the program features one experiment tied to a rotating STEM theme, so girls who return through 5th grade experience a range of disciplines. The timing was perfect: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmbfnews.com\/2025\/09\/23\/next-class-astronauts-has-more-women-than-men-first-time-nasa-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 marked the first NASA astronaut class with more women than men<\/a>, a milestone that fueled the day\u2019s inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We wanted to show them that science is about discovery, creativity, and solving real problems. That is what makes science so exciting. You can try something, adjust, and try again. By the end of the day, she told organizers she couldn\u2019t wait to come back. This year, she did! In fact, during the keynote address, at least half of the girls raised their hands when asked if they had attended before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not just about slime or engineering challenges; it\u2019s about being seen, being welcomed, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iff.com\/es\/science\/innovations\/\">discovering that science<\/a> is a space where everyone can belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Keeping_the_Heart_of_Science_Alive\"><\/span>Keeping the Heart of Science Alive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This program shows what happens when enthusiasm aligns with purpose.
