Essential Takeaways
  • With bioscience, we uncover nature’s codes that reveal the marvels of molecules, microbes, and nearly hidden ecosystems.
  • Every application teaches us more about biology, about systems, and about nature.
  • Biotechnology then applies this science to create innovative, sustainable materials.
  • Among the most promising examples is Designed Enzymatic Biomaterials (DEB).
  • Bioscience and biotechnology are two disciplines that work in conjunction.

Have you ever been in a library and marveled at all the hidden knowledge inside each book? Books that share how plants turn sunlight into sugar.

Textbooks that describe how proteins fold into life’s essential shapes. Or tomes that illustrate microbes doing the unimaginable: thriving in freezing waters.

Every day, our bio scientists explore nature – the quintessential living library – and ask a simple question: “How can we use this knowledge to make life better?”

Bioscience and Biotechnology: The Why & How of Scientific Innovation

Bioscience and Biotechnology: A Continuous Loop of Discovery

Over the span of 150 years of scientific leadership, we’ve learned a great deal about the natural world and have used those findings to help address socio-economic issues such as food security, health & wellness, and cost pressures.

With bioscience, we uncover nature’s codes that reveal the marvels of molecules, microbes, and nearly hidden ecosystems. Biotechnology captures those discoveries and transforms them into products and processes that improve our daily lives and create more sustainable, affordable solutions.

With bioscience and biotech, the journey never ends. Every application teaches us more about biology, about systems, and about nature, which continues to surprise us again and again.

Leveraging the relation between these two disciplines has led IFF down a path of innovation, especially as we look to explore:

  • What sets bioscience and biotechnology apart, and how they fuel discovery
  • Why these disciplines drive innovation in food, fragrance, health, and sustainability
  • How we’re transforming the food and beverage, health, animal nutrition, scent, fuel, and home care industries with cutting-edge biotechnology
  • The future of bio-innovation and IFF’s role in shaping it

Harness the power of bioscience and drive innovation.

What Sets Bioscience and Biotechnology Apart and How They Fuel Discovery

So often the conversation revolves around the differences between bioscience and biotechnology or framing the topic as ‘bioscience versus biotechnology.’

The truth is that these two disciplines work in conjunction. They are not opposites, but partners—melody and harmony, inquiry and application.

Bioscience asks why life works the way it does. Biotechnology asks how to turn that understanding into meaningful impact. Together, they convert curiosity into solutions that shape our everyday world.

As Dr. Sharief Barends, Principal Scientist at IFF Health & Biosciences, frames it:

“ Innovation isn’t just about what’s next—it’s about what’s better. Every discovery applied brings us closer to understanding nature’s true potential to make life better. ”

This continuous cycle of discovery and application is not just a scientific process. It is a story that unfolds  across IFF’s innovation pipeline, where ideas move from petri dish to real-world impact.

Among the most promising examples is Designed Enzymatic Biomaterials (DEB), a platform that draws from bioscience to create new materials and uses biotechnology to shape them for purpose and performance.

As Leticia Gonçalves, President of Health & Biosciences at IFF, puts it:

“ DEB has the power to redefine how (bio)chemical materials will look in the 21st century: tailored, functional, nature-inspired and safer. ”

DEB exemplifies how bioscience drives breakthrough platforms. Biotechnology then applies this science to create innovative, sustainable materials, offering both high performance and clear purpose.

Why These Disciplines Drive Innovation in Food, Fragrance, Health, and Sustainability

At IFF, bioscience and biotechnology aren’t lab-only concepts. They are the backbone of solutions that scale across global industries.
With more than 30 manufacturing sites dedicated to biotech products, 800 R&D and application scientists, and 5,600 bioscience patents, we turn bioscience into breakthroughs daily.

Bioscience for breakthroughs
Our presence spans across Europe, Asia, and the U.S.

We utilize metagenomics, bio-informatics or bio-analytics, and microbial libraries collected over decades to develop end-to-end solutions that are used every day. Think enzymes that remain active for longer, cultures that add flavor and mouthfeel, and probiotic strains that adapt to various delivery systems.

The true impact of bioscience and biotechnology is seen in the ripple effects:

  • Mapping spoilage genes in food leads to reducing  global waste.
  • Studying enabled detergents that cut household energy consumption by nearly a third.
  • Unlocking microbial metabolism produced compostable films—an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastics.
  • Investigating microbiomes led to clinically observed health benefits.

Every breakthrough begins with bioscience, the lens of understanding, and ends with biotechnology, the hands of transformation.

Bioscience in Sustainability

IFF is an established leader in sustainable biotechnology, and our solutions help to reduce waste, water usage, and energy for our customers and in our own manufacturing processes. Additionally, our cutting-edge sustainable products work to improve health & well-being for people and for healthier livestock.

Our probiotics improve feed conversion, increase nutrient availability, and provide feed additive solutions to reduce the use of antibiotics for farm animals. Additionally, they help reduce pollution by reducing harmful chemicals that do not reabsorb into nature.

For humans, our probiotics and natural extracts work to improve health & wellbeing, with products that target immune health, gut health, women’s health and cognitive health.

“ Biotechnology is an exciting and meaningful driver of sustainability. We’ve been doing this for decades, and in so many cases, the innovations we’re creating at IFF have an amazing sustainability profile that helps our customers meet their ESG goals as well as provide meaningful sustainability impact for the environment and planetary health and healing. ”

Renee Henze, Chief Sustainability Officer, IFF

The Future of Bio innovation

Now, AI is rewriting the rules of biology. Machine learning, generative models, and digital twins are accelerating discovery and making biotech more resilient, scalable, and precise. For example, digital twins in biopharmaceutical manufacturing are enhancing productivity by integrating human and machine intelligence in real time.

These emerging tools are helping map the paths from molecular insight to real-world solutions faster and smarter than ever before.

The biotechnology industry is expanding at a remarkable rate. From an estimated $1.74 trillion in 2025, it’s projected to grow to over $5 trillion by 2034, driven by breakthroughs like CRISPR gene-editing, AI-powered drug discovery, precision medicine, and sustainable biotech applications.

This surge highlights that bioscience and biotechnology are not just advancing in the lab, they’re moving across industries, touching health, food, the environment and beyond.

These emerging tools are helping map the paths from molecular insight to real-world solutions faster and smarter than ever before.

In the end, bioscience isn’t about studying life in isolation. And biotechnology isn’t just about building solutions.

Together, they chart a path toward a future where scientific understanding becomes a foundation for healthier people, more sustainable industries, and a more balanced planet.
