Creating greater harmony between livestock production and the environment is a driving force for good across the industry. Here, we’ll explore how this influential movement is inspiring innovative feed solutions that deliver positive change but remain firmly rooted in commercial reality.
With over 40 years’ experience of developing innovative feed solutions, we understand the animal protein industry. Our rich heritage and pioneering science give us an exceptional depth of knowledge that we continue to expand to meet the evolving needs of our customers –always with sustainability in mind. Our growing portfolio of enzymes, probiotics, essential oils, and natural betaine are all part of this unfolding sustainability story and are set to take leading roles in the next chapter.
We’ve made it our mission to remove 100% of inorganic phosphate from feed. Why? Because it’s responsible for huge amounts of phosphates being released into the environment which leads to 5 million tons of C02 emissions every year.
It was never going to be easy. Far from it. The animal nutrition industry uses 7 million tons of inorganic phosphate annually – in addition to phytase – to ensure sufficient phosphorous is released from feed for healthy animal growth. But we like a challenge.
Environmental concern around land use and land use change change (LULUC) and high CO2 emissions during transportation, is driving interest in sustainable alternatives to soybean meal.
There’s still a long way to go, but we’re excited to be at the forefront of developments and proud to have carried out pioneering research that lays the groundwork for the complete replacement of soybean meal with sustainable alternatives. Crucially, by combining certain enzymes and probiotics, we can successfully address concerns around performance and costs, enabling producers to nourish animals cost effectively – even without soy. In other words, our feed solutions provide a trusted roadmap for soy-free diets and more sustainable production.
Just like us, animals get stressed. Heat, reproduction and transportation can all trigger this unwanted physical response which, left unchecked, can cause major discomfort and health problems. This makes it both an animal welfare and productivity issue. So it’s no surprise that we’ve made mitigating the damaging effects of stress a priority.
We believe Betafin® is the key. This natural betaine made from sustainable sugar beets has been shown to help reduce stress issues in animals, with standout results reported against key areas of concern such as preventing dehydration, improving energy availability, and maintaining both milk production and reproductive potential.
And let’s not forget the sustainability gains. Happier and healthier animals means better feed efficiency which in turn helps to lower greenhouse emissions – a win-win for productivity and our planet.
With calls for the complete removal of antibiotics from feed getting louder, IFF is ideally placed to help the animal protein industry rise to this critical challenge.
We understand that moving away from antibiotics will only happen if there is a strong and credible case for making this seismic shift. Producers need to know they can still maintain the welfare and performance of farm animals, otherwise concerns around growth, immunity, and resilience will slow uptake and do little to mitigate the global public health risks associated with antibiotic resistance. The good news is, we can give this reassurance.
The synergistic combination of enzymes and probiotics in Syncra® AVI has been shown through numerous studies to optimize the microbiome – known to be one of the best ways to produce healthier and more resilient animals – improve nutrient digestibility and increase feed efficiency. With positive results like these, we can build confidence in the power of more sustainable solutions.
Together we can free animal production from antibiotics.
