Dr. Zhixiong Xue — Engineering Microbes, Powering Possibility 03 November 2025 in: Bioscience Bioscience For Dr. Zhixiong Xue, PhD, Senior Principal Scientist and Technical Fellow, discovery begins with curiosity — and ends with impact.“The most rewarding part of my job,” he says, “is that I get to find things out. I get to tweak microorganisms, ask them to do things for us — making products that have an impact on society and benefit the company as well.” At IFF, Zhixiong is a molecular biologist pushing the boundaries of what biotechnology can do. His work centers on engineering microorganisms to produce what the world needs — efficiently, sustainably, and at scale. Biotechnology has been around for a long time, now we’re trying to realize its potential. That potential is vast: reducing dependence on fossil fuels, improving production processes, and unlocking new value for customers — all within the same facilities and frameworks that already exist. “If we can make, in addition to ethanol, something else in the process, we increase the value to the customer,” he says. “That’s the part I’m excited about.” Zhixiong knows that reaching the next frontier isn’t easy. “We’re getting closer to the theoretical limit,” he admits. “Further improvement is small and hard to combine.” But that’s exactly what drives him — the challenge of what comes next. We don’t have all the answers yet, but that’s the fun part — getting the answer. Want to explore more minds behind the science?
