Reuse: Technology Solutions for the Next Generation

What happens to a company’s old computers when they are replaced with new ones? At IFF, we believe in a circular economy and work to #domoregood with our waste, even the electronic kind. Thanks to a dedicated team of employees, we’ve found ways to repurpose our decommissioned IT equipment by giving back to the communities that need it the most and executing on our mission to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

In 2007 we launched this initiative with a simple call-to-action: apply IFF enterprise-wide recycling targets within IT. And they did!  The IT team found a way to repurpose the hardware for students who needed support in bridging the digital divide. Over the years, our partnerships around this program have grown, expanding to schools in Kenya, Senegal, and Suriname.

A working laptop or desktop can open the door to digital learning, online resources, and new career opportunities. What started as a local effort in Tilburg has evolved into a global movement, proving that even small actions can create significant change.

A Simple Idea With A Big Impact

IFF upgrades its IT equipment every five years to stay ahead in an increasingly digital world. With thousands of employees across multiple locations, that adds up to a significant amount of old hardware that needs to be replaced.

“If something is at the end of its life for us, that doesn’t mean it has to be for someone else. That’s repurposing 101.”

Instead of simply disposing of these devices, the IT team saw potential. “If something is at the end of its life for us, that doesn’t mean it has to be for someone else. That’s repurposing 101,” shares Matt Ridgewell, Vice President of Digital Workplace Servicing at IFF, and one of the driving forces behind the initiative. “We are always asking ourselves, where can we create more value?”

How It Works

The process is simple but effective. Each computer goes through a thorough inspection process before it reaches its destination. The team ensures that all equipment is still in working condition. If a device can no longer function, it is responsibly recycled in line with IFF’s other ESG commitments.

Once deemed functional, the computers are securely wiped to remove all data. Then, they are repaired, cleaned, and reconfigured for their new users. The team works closely with local charities, like Stichting Dimele Africa, to ensure that donations go to schools where there is an urgent need. Another key part of this process takes place at Yonder, formerly ROC Tilburg School for ICT and Media Technology. There, students gain hands-on experience learning how to repair and configure the computers before they are shipped.

“Recognizing that their work has educational value and contributes to a bigger purpose is very fulfilling for our students.” – Hüseyin Simsek (Yonder)

Multifaceted, IFF’s assistance provides valuable resources to these school communities while also providing real-world training opportunities in IT.

“This gesture highlights the importance IFF places on community involvement,” said Hüseyin Simsek, a teacher at Yonder, highlights the importance of this initiative. “It’s a contribution we value immensely.”

Real Stories, Real Impact

Many schools in underserved areas do not have access to digital tools, leaving students at a disadvantage regarding education and future opportunities. With a working computer, the digital divide shrinks, providing the students access to the broader ecosystem and helping prepare them for the future.

Mustafa Al-Harazi, Site Technology Lead, has worked at IFF for almost 45 years. Known as the initiative’s heart and soul, Mustafa’s favorite experience happened during a visit to Kenya as part of the on-the-ground donation process. Walking into a classroom filled with students using computers, he saw firsthand what this initiative means to them.

“Seeing the kids get into working and playing with their computers is genuinely satisfying. The joy, excitement, and curiosity they showed as they explored the computers were so lovely to witness. It’s moments like those that make me realize that all of our efforts are totally worth it. It feels good to know that we’re helping them learn and have fun in ways they might not have had the chance to otherwise,” Mustafa shares.

Over the years, IFF has expanded beyond computers to include clothing and sports gear donations. In Kenya, for example, donated football uniforms and equipment have supported local teams, creating opportunities for young people beyond the classroom.

Mustafa says, “Our donations have even created some jobs for the people who received our support. Seeing that our work truly impacts people’s lives fills me with immense pride.”

What This Means For You

At IFF, we believe anything is possible when employees take positive action. As part of our pledge to #domoregood for people, the planet, and products, our sustainability ambitions include calling on all employees to help us reduce waste. We especially look to combat waste to landfill on a small and large scale. Grassroots efforts such as the computer donation project play a key role in how employees have the freedom to drive meaningful change.

“You don’t have to be in leadership to make a difference,” said Matt. “All you have to do is put in the work. Small actions lead to big impact.”

The message is simple: giving back is always an option. When there’s an opportunity to #domoregood, we strive to take it. To become a part and IFF, explore and learn about our IT job opportunities.
