Heat stress can disrupt flock performance. Intestinal health challenges can affect productivity. At the same time, many operations are looking for practical ways to manage antibiotic use while keeping birds healthy and production consistent. In practice, these challenges are not abstract. They show up in feed mills, layer houses, breeder operations, veterinary decisions, and daily business planning. For poultry producers in Nigeria, South Africa, and across the continent, the question is often simple: how do we protect performance when so many variables are moving at once? For one integrated poultry producer in Nigeria, however, that question became urgent. The operation included commercial layers, breeder production, and feed milling. It was already a significant player in the market, with more than 280,000 commercial layers, 10,000 layer breeders, and an annual feed volume of 25,000 metric tons. The business produced eggs and day-old chicks for Nigeria and neighboring countries, while also planning further capacity expansion. But scale did not remove the pressure. The team looked at the feed, the production environment, the health challenges, and the economics behind the operation. Specifically, that included reviewing feed formulation and raw material quality, assessing soybean meal quality through trypsin inhibitor analysis, and using laboratory analysis of fecal samples to better understand the intestinal health challenge. The team also conducted a controlled field trial with 10,000 layers over 60 days. This mattered because the producer was not facing one isolated issue. Feed cost, nutrient availability, intestinal balance, heat stress, mortality, and egg quality were connected. A narrow response may have addressed part of the problem. Egg production increased from 82% to 88.5%. Mortality decreased from 3.2% to 0.6%. Daily feed quantity per bird decreased from 120 grams to 115 grams. Egg size moved from less than 60 grams to a range of 62 to 65 grams. Annual feed cost decreased from $3.5 million to $3.2 million. The case also reported a reduction in antibiotic cost from $5 million to $1 million, shown in the customer value table. The total savings shown for the customer in the case material was $2.45 million, compared with $0.153 million for the competing solution. The same case summary also noted that relationship, trust, tenacity, and problem-solving were “immeasurably valuable” in the outcome. That last point matters. The numbers tell one part of the story. But the way the work happened also matters. The team collaborated with the customer’s veterinarians, nutritionists, managing director, and purchasing team. They connected technical analysis with day-to-day production realities. They looked at the business impact and the biological challenge together.
