About the fragrance ingredients compendium

We’re pleased to present the

14th Edition of the Fragrance Ingredients Perfumer’s Compendium

We have redesigned our compendium with you and your needs in mind – using our perfumery expertise to create a tool that helps you find the ingredients that matter, adding key information about each ingredient.

How to Read the Compendium

The physical data shown on the product pages should be used as a guide, always refer to our formal documentation for the latest information. For any further questions or to request the latest product specifications and safety data sheets please contact your IFF sales office or IFF distributor.

about ingredients compendium

The Note Impact chart reflects how an ingredient may perform relative to being part of the top, heart, or base note of a fragrance. The chart is meant to provide the user with a general reflection of how the ingredient might evolve within an overall fragrance.

Renewable ingredients, defined by IFF as ingredients that contain more than 50% carbon from renewable sources.

The biologically mediated degradation or transformation of substances usually carried out by microorganisms.

READILY BIODEGRADABLE

Ingredients classified as Readily Biodegradable have to meet the following criteria:

Ingredients measured following OECD (301-series or 310) or equivalent guidelines for screening of chemicals for ready biodegradability, achieving at least 60% (ThOD or ThCO2) or 70% (DOC) biodegradation within 28 days. The 10-day window criterion is not taken into account to conclude if an ingredient is readily biodegradable (i.e., substances fulfilling the pass level criterion within 28 days, but failing the 10-day window criterion, are considered readily biodegradable).

INHERENTLY BIODEGRADABLE

Ingredients classified as Inherently Biodegradable have to meet one of the following criteria:

Ingredients measured following OECD (301-series or 310) or equivalent guidelines for screening of chemicals for ready biodegradability, with one of the following outcomes:

Pass level criterion for Readily biodegradable is almost fulfilled in the 28-day test period, i.e., ThOD (or ThCO2) reaching 58% or DOC removal reaching 68%.

Pass level of 60% (ThOD or ThCO2) or 70% (DOC) biodegradation is fulfilled when incubation is extended beyond 28 days but no more than 60 days.

Ingredients measured following OECD (302-series) or equivalent guidelines, with biodegradation above 70% (measured as BOD, DOC removal or COD) in test duration of no more than 60 days.

ULTIMATELY BIODEGRADABLE

Ingredients classified as Ultimately Biodegradable have to meet the following criteria:

Ingredients measured following OECD (309-series) or equivalent biodegradation simulation studies achieving a mineralization half-life of <60 days.

NON-BIODEGRADABLE

Ingredients classified as Non-Biodegradable are those that do not meet the criteria for readily, inherently or ultimately biodegradable.

DISCLAIMER

“Wherever available, measured (experimental) data are considered. Where measured data are not available (yet) on the ingredient itself, measured data of a close structural analogue can be used to read-across from, conform the stringent criteria of the Read-Across Assessment Framework published by ECHA. The biodegradation classification of ingredients provided herein may change over time, as new experimental studies can be performed using optimized test design or different OECD test methods, the outcomes of which may override existing data, or may fill a data gap for ingredients that have not been tested before and have therefore been classified as non-biodegradable by default. The biodegradation classification of ingredients provided herein applies only to the primary ingredient sold and excludes any antioxidants, solvents, or any other additives present. More information about the biodegradation status of ingredients including additives can be provided upon request.”

An upcycled ingredient is one that contains >=50% of its carbon from a material that was a waste or side stream from a process either internal or external to IFF. A waste or side stream is defined as either:

  • A material that would otherwise have had low economic value. For example: agricultural residue that would have been composted on the field.
  • A material stream that was not the primary product produced in a process, based on lower relative economic value. For example: turpentine as a side-stream in the paper making process; exhausted rose petals as a side stream of the rose distillation process.

An upcycled ingredient may contain a low amount of non-upcycled antioxidant that is required to fulfil its intended function.

The % ISO 16128-1 Natural Derived Ingredients is calculated by totalling the % of the ingredients that meet the following criteria in addition to the criteria for ISO 16128-1 Natural Ingredients:

  • ISO 16128-1 defines Natural Derived Ingredients as ingredients of greater than 50 % natural origin, by molecular weight, by renewable carbon content, obtained through defined chemical and/or biological processes with the intention of chemical modification.
  • In our assessment, IFF has considered the following processes as acceptable:
    – The Positive list of reactions as presented in Table B.1 of ISO 16128-1,
    – Processes following green chemistry principles: Ingredients made using Green Chemistry (or Eco Respectful), Low-Waste Processes.

* As of June 2022, IFF has aligned our definitions and ingredient classifications for Natural and Natural Derived with the ISO 16128 standard, which applies more stringent criteria than the IFF-specific criteria that were applied prior to that. All natural and natural derived ingredients re-classified according to the ISO 16128 standard have gone through a review process by GRA based on information from IFF operations and our vendors.

Ingredients meeting the following criteria:

  • does not contain any ingredients from living animals or animal* tissue as part of its formulation
  • does not contain any ingredients harvested from animals (i.e., produced by the animal but not part of the animal itself) such as beeswax, honey, eggs, milk, etc. as part of its formulation
  • does not contain any ingredients produced from harvested animal products such as shellac as part of its formulation
  • does not contain any ingredients derived from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) as part of its formulation

* For the purpose of this document “animal” includes any animal from the entire animal kingdom and includes vertebrates as well as multicellular invertebrate organisms.

Octanol-water partition coefficient. Measured values have been included where available. Where measured data was not available, values have been calculated by using Syracuse Research Corporation’s KowWin method.

Levels are offered as an aid to the Perfumer’s creativity and have no regulatory significance.

International Products Codes (IPC) are shown for each ingredient to ensure positive identification. Please note: some of the pages of this Compendium list a number of different IPC’s for the same generic product.

The performance and stability data for each ingredient is intended as a guide to the ingredients’ performance and stability in various end products. This information should not be relied upon as any warranty of the ingredients’ performance and stability in any end product. It is the customer’s responsibility to fully test and satisfy themselves that the ingredient is suitable for use in the customer’s end product.
