We believe our company can play a critical role in addressing the climate crisis— by working to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) and helping to safeguard life on our planet.
In 2017, IFF signed the “We Are Still In” declaration of support for the Paris Agreement and climate action. In September 2019, during the United Nations Climate Action Summit, we reconfirmed our commitment to mitigating climate change by being among the first companies to sign the U.N.’s “Business Ambition for 1.5°C: Our Only Future” pledge, a communications and advocacy campaign to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius through more aggressive science-based targets for emissions reduction.
In 2022, we updated our science-based pathway to reduce GHGs in line with the Paris Agreement to be reflective of our combined company footprint and new 2021 baseline and submitted to the Science Based Targets Initiative for approval. Our goal is to reduce our absolute Scope 1 emissions (those we directly control) and Scope 2 emissions (those generated though purchased electricity and steam) by 50% below 2021 levels by 2030. As of 2022 we have a 6% reduction below 2021 levels.
In addition to IFF’s Scope 1 and 2 goals for 2030 and 2040 as outlined in our Do More Good Plan, we have a Scope 3 absolute emission reduction target of 30% below 2021 levels by 2030. As part of the Do More Good Plan, we will work to further align our company commitment to Scope 3 emissions reduction by continuing to promote CDP Supply Chain for the adoption of SBTs throughout our value chain. Looking forward, that effort will include collecting actual supplier emissions data as it relates to IFF’s value chain in an effort to target our top suppliers for additional reductions.
